Hawaii's wealthiest Congress members
November 30th, 2009 by RickCongress is sometimes described as a millionaire's club and that point is pretty much confirmed in the personal disclosure forms filed by members of Hawaii's delegation.
Each year, the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics compiles a list of the nation's wealthiest U.S. Senators and Representatives. In a study released earlier this month, the center found that 238 members of Congress have a net worth of $1 million or more. (See:)
The wealthiest is Rep. Darrell Issa (R-California) whom the center said is worth more than $250 million. The center listed Rep. Jane Harman (D-California) as the next wealthiest member, with an average net worth of about of about $244 million.
Sen. Herbert Kohl (D-Wisconsin), who owns the Milwaukee Bucks, was third at $214 million.
The personal finances of Hawaii's delegation were much more modest but there's no mistaking them for the poor.
-- Sen. Daniel Inouye headed the list with an average net worth of $3.4 million;
-- Rep. Mazie Hirono was next with a net worth of about $2 million;
-- Sen. Daniel Akaka's average net worth was listed at $791,000;
-- Meanwhile, Rep. Neil Abercrombie's was among the least wealthy members of Congress, with an estimated net worth of about $8,000, the center said.
The center's listing for Abercrombie probably understates his true holdings but not by a lot.
According to Abercrombie's filings with the House Clerk's office, he receives $29,000 a year from his pension as a state Legislator and has between $1,001 and $15,000 in his account with the University of Hawaii Credit Union in addition to his congressional salary. (See:)
He also lists his spouse Nancie Caraway's income as "not available." Caraway is an employee of the Research Corporation of the University of Hawaii.

Funny how Neil cops out with "not available", what happened to full disclosure and transparency?
